A New Way to Label Text: Span + Line Labeling

In many labeling tasks, one format doesn't fit all. Some projects require labeling full lines of text, while others need more precise span-level annotations. And sometimes, both are necessary — especially when dealing with varied content like transcripts, contracts, or customer service chats.
To make it easier to work with these mixed needs, we’ve introduced Span + Line Labeling.
This new labeling type combines two existing approaches:
- Line Labeling, where you label the entire row or sentence.
- Span Labeling, where you select specific words or phrases within that line.
With Span + Line Labeling, you don’t have to choose one or the other. You can label a whole line and highlight specific parts within it, all in the same project
When does this help?
Let’s say you're analyzing a transcript. You might want to:
- Label the whole line as a “question” or “statement,”
- And also highlight a specific name or location mentioned in that line.
This approach gives you more flexibility without switching between tools or project types.
How to get started
If you’re already familiar with Span Labeling in Datasaur, this will feel familiar. Just select the Span + Line Labeling type when creating your project. You’ll be able to:
- Apply line-level labels directly to a row,
- And also use span-level tools to select text within that same row.
You can read the full details in our documentation.
